Arrival of the baby elephant is scored for intermediate-level concert band. Composed in 2009 at the invitation of Reed Music, the work forms part of a suite of three short pieces.

Arrival of the baby elephant begins with a trumpeting call, accompanied by a progression of spiky, staccato chords.

There follows a cheeky style of music that swaggers, pauses, then swaggers again to a tutti finale.

As suggested by the title, this work is inspired by a hippopotamus. The musical ideas in my composition are intended to portray a weighty, yet nimble quality.

The piece is inspired by the formidable power and prowess of big cats, such as tigers, leopards, jaguars and lions.

While composing the piece, I imagined the rhythmic swiping of paws and claws, plus I also included a stealthy melody set by way of a series of modulations.
