Composer’s Note

Flight of Fancy is a lively and colourful piece of approximately 3 minutes duration. It is available in five different arrangements! This arrangement is for 2 saxophones (alto & tenor).

I composed this arrangement of Flight of Fancy in response to an international Call for Scores and it was subsequently selected for premiere performance in the USA by saxophonists Colette Hall and Kendra Emery. In keeping with the original version (for alto sax & piano), this arrangement comprises three sections, each lasting about a minute or so.

The first section kicks off in an energetic and cheerful way with the bright, upper registers of both instruments at play. Angular melodies and countermelodies are traded between the instruments, along with a contrasting theme fashioned atop a jazzy, dance-inspired bass line.

The middle section of the work is perhaps the more unearthly music of the work. Little updrafts and whirlwinds of intermingling sax figurations add a haunting quality to chromatically inflected melodic material, evoking, for me, images of night and a kind of magic.

The final section of the piece – which brings us back to earth with its recapitulation of earlier material – is set in motion by the sound of its ‘slow-to-start’, hand-cranked engine. – M.O.
